We write the year 52 BC. Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome was the richest city in the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis of millions and the center of a vast empire. The republic was founded on the principles of power sharing and fierce personal competition, with no one person able to assume absolute control.
Gaius Julius Caesar (Ciarn Hinds, Munich) completed a long campaign to conquer Gaul. In the course of his conquests he became rich and perfected a deadly army led by the 13th Legion, a group of men ready to obey his every command. The main characters of the series are two warring members of the Thirteen, Lucious Vorenus (Kevin McKidd, “Kingdom of Heaven”) and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson, “King Arthur”).
Vorenus was a conscientious soldier and family man. He enjoyed the respect of the people and the emperor himself. Pullo is a woman who drinks privately. His fierce fighting skills and rebellious actions also made him popular. Vorenus and Pullo’s troubled relationship begins when circumstances force them to work together on a mission of great importance to Caesar.
Back in Rome, Casesar’s niece Atia (Polly Walker, Sliver) is a very ambitious and cunning member of the Roman nobility. Alongside Caesar’s lover, Servilla, we have two women whose intelligence and cruelty rival any man in the Empire. Atia’s son (and future Roman Emperor) Octavian (Max Pirkis, Master and Commander: At World’s End) is a naturally intelligent teenager with a deep understanding of Roman politics.
Caesar’s main rivals are Brutus (Tobias Menzies, The Lowdown) and Pompey Magnus (Kenneth Cranham, Layer Cake). Pompey was a Roman co-consul with Caesar. In the fight between Caesar and Pompey, everything boils down to will and cunning. Finally the sword came. Brutus’ relationship with Caesar is much more complex. Caesar needed Brutus and his influential family to legitimize his rule, but Brutus was a republican who resented Caesar’s imperial ambitions. The relationship between father and son is a source of great internal conflict for both of them.
Caesar’s power struggle and its consequences for Rome are the backdrop against which all the character conflicts take place. Politics, personal rivalries, friendships and some Oedipal relationships are cleverly mixed with historical facts to tell the unique story of Rome during one of its most turbulent times. Don’t worry, I’m only scratching the surface here. There are many characters and storylines in this sprawling story that I leave to the audience to discover.
